Staccato strings work in tandem with dark and foreboding guitar work to strike an urgent, almost dangerous chord which accurately captures the beauty and strife of our current cultural climate. The lyrics of In the Dark, the brand-new single from husband and wife duo The Jorgensens, tell a universal tale that could easily be applied to many life situations – love, intimacy, and self-image.
The accompanying video, however, leaves little to the imagination; masked faces, rainbow flags, and protest signs displaying the now familiar mantra “I Can’t Breathe” flash over the screen as Brianna and Kurt ask Are you lonely in the dark?
One must conclude that this is a message of love. The darkness must indicate the veil of hatred that divides different racial, cultural, and political groups and the way to find the light is to come together in the dark.
Can you break away from your alibis?
Will you meet me in the dark?
The time is ripe to be brave and use our voices to come together and unite through these difficult times. Many artists, particularly in this Americana genre, wouldn’t dare enter the waters of politics for fear of alienating their fans, but The Jorgensens have not shied away from their duty to speak up. In less nuanced hands, this message could land with a thud, but the lyrics amplify the connection shared by two people to generalize it to our current group context. The video is an effective vehicle for the song, demonstrating that our approach to intimacy can ultimately be applied to the broader problems that divide us.
Truly effective use of strings on this track - at times staccato and plucked, at other times stretched and wandering along with Kurt and Brianna’s soulful vocals as they trade lines in a song and video that packs a truly potent political punch. How do we cope in these dangerous and divided times? We come together in the dark. As Kurt sings in the opening line Life isn’t easy on the singular side.
A+ production here. The Jorgensens are known for their strong songwriting and soulful vocals but, when wrapped in such gorgeous and lush textures as in this track and their last single Voo Doo, excellent songwriting is elevated to the truly breathtaking.
