Ella Blue is a free-spirit of a singer songwriter and her new single One opens with a single guitar chord repeated over and over as she woos us with a whispery wail, ultimately breaking the pattern to unleash a Neko Case-style jam that showcases her wild and expansive voice – a calling card to the heavens – which climbs from kitty coo up the tall pillars of sound to ethereal heights.
Blue has spent time in Los Angeles and is currently based in New Orleans, and we feel the combination of environmental influences in the soundscape here, a distinct French Quarter Voo Doo mixed with a sunlit Laurel Canyon vibe– Southern California in the magic hour; a barefoot back porch jam session. The journey of self and identity formation through a 60s lens.
It’s a long road and I’m coming home to you.
When she sings Take a bit of me, me, me / Put it away, it’s a declaration of personhood, of individuality. One by Ella Blueis an affirmation of the extroversion of youth, the winding paths of love, and the migration of self, wrapped in a textured, vintage throwback sound that comforts with its vulnerability and enchants with its vibrations.
