 Wisconsin’s Nick Anderson and the Skinny Lovers have a brand new single and video for the song King and Queen off their 2018 album Ephren. A love letter to summer, the song opens with a pop-start of guitars and the line I want to be the King of the summer, but we live in different cities. The instrumentation rounds out the sound with the typical high-energy drums and a solid bass sound – a nice 3-piece scenario – refreshing in this era that’s dominated by synths and beats.

The success of this song hinges on two main factors – First, it’s a truly solid, radio-ready pop confection with an instantly unforgettable hook:

Pop a beer open / drink it till we’re frisky / We’re the King and Queen of the summer

The well-written tune effectively captures the fleeting vibes of summer, the challenges of long-distance love, and the fun of youth, but the real star of the track is Nick’s voice, an octave-jumping miracle set of pipes that stands out with its melodicism in a genre full of emo/pop screamers.

The video is a throwback to the wacky, fun music videos of the 80s – think Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun or Twisted Sister’s We’re Not Going to Take It. A low-voiced stranger emerges from a smoky van in a parking lot and invites the band in.
